KUCHING: A cable termination fault that caused a mild explosion on a 33KV transformer was the cause of power interruption that affected several parts of Kuching, Bau, Lundu and Sematan since 9.07am yesterday.

Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB), in a press statement, said the incident had resulted in the transformers at the Semenggoh sub-station to trip, causing a loss of 72MW load for Kuching.

A Fire and Rescue team from Batu Lintang Station was called to secure the premises before maintenance team could enter the sub-station to investigate the extent of damage, to isolate the fault, do the necessary repair works and restore power.

However, due to the thick smoke the team could only enter the substation around 11.30am.

Repair works were ongoing and power restoration started in stages from 11.10am.

SEB thanked members of the public for their patience and understanding and also Fire and Rescue Department in Batu Lintang for their swift response.

The company apologises for the inconveniences caused.
