PRESS RELEASE

21 May 2025    - Kuching Water Board (KWB) Update on Pipeline Leak at Jalan Highfield Light Industrial–Jalan Batu Kawa

Kuching Water Board (KWB) is aware of the ongoing leak affecting the 1400mm diameter pumping main at Jalan Highfield Light Industrial–Jalan Batu Kawa. A comprehensive site assessment has been completed, which includes detailed mapping of the pipeline and identification of major underground utilities in the vicinity.

This critical pipeline, which has been in service for over 30 years, supplies approximately 170 million litres per day (MLD), representing about 20% of Kuching’s total treated water production of 778 MLD. It serves key areas such as Matang Jaya, Petra Jaya, Demak Laut, and Semariang, including zones under the jurisdiction of JBALB, as well as surrounding communities.

Initial repair works began on 18 April 2025. However, the works were halted due to incompatibility between the supplied materials and the aging infrastructure.

To avoid extended delays, KWB has taken proactive steps to fabricate the required fittings locally, circumventing the longer lead times typically required for sourcing from West Malaysia. With the necessary materials now ready, the second attempt at repair has been scheduled to commence from 9.00 PM on 23 May 2025 and is expected to be completed by 7.00 AM on 24 May 2025.

As a result of the ongoing issue and upcoming repair works, consumers in the following areas are expected to experience low water pressure or no water supply:
  • Jalan Matang (from Kubah Ria to Batu 9 Jalan Matang)
  • Taman Sri Harmoni
  • Jalan Sungai Tengah
  • Jalan Tun Abdul Rahman Yakub
  • Jalan Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Haji Muhamad Salahudin
  • Jalan Demak
  • Jalan Bako
  • Muara Tebas
  • Surrounding areas in Petra Jaya, including JBALB areas of jurisdiction
During the recovery period, consumers may also encounter low water pressure, airlocks, and/or discoloured (dirty) water.
To mitigate the impact, KWB water tankers will be mobilised to provide an alternative water supply to the affected areas. Consumers are strongly advised to store sufficient water in advance for the duration of the interruption.
KWB remains committed to resolving this issue as swiftly as possible and with minimal disruption. We will continue to monitor the situation closely and coordinate all necessary measures to restore full system reliability.
We thank the public for their patience and understanding.
